Codecs
A codec is a program capable of encoding and decoding a digital data stream or signal, that reduces the number of bytes consumed by large files and programs. Codec programs are required for your media player to play your downloaded music and movies.
The word codec may be a combination of any of the following: 'compressor-decompressor', 'coder-decoder', or 'compression/decompression algorithm'. All of these variations mean the same thing: a codec is a computer program that both shrinks large movie files, and makes them playable on your computer.
There are numerous standard codec schemes. Some are used mainly to minimize file transfer time, and are employed on the Internet. Others are intended to maximize the data that can be stored in a given amount of disk space, or on a CD-ROM.
